What is Baby name generator?

Baby Name Generator — Generate baby name ideas from real U.S. Social Security birth data — filter by boy/girl, first letter, and top 100 or 1,000 popularity. Free tool.

Every name comes from the U.S. Social Security Administration's national baby-name data for births in 2024 (public domain — a work of the U.S. federal government). The tool embeds the top 1,000 girl names and top 1,000 boy names with their real birth counts; SSA ranks each gender's list by count descending (alphabetical on ties, minimum 5 occurrences). The generator filters this real data by your gender, letter, and band choices, then draws a random sample without replacement — no names are invented. Randomness uses a seeded PRNG when you give a seed, otherwise Math.random, so unseeded runs vary.

How to use Baby Name Generator

  1. 1Pick a gender — boy, girl, or both — in the "Gender" field.
  2. 2Optionally type one starting letter (for example A) to only see baby names beginning with that letter.
  3. 3Set "How many names" (1–100) and choose the popularity band: top-100 for the most popular baby names or top-1000 for a wider baby name list.
  4. 4Add a seed word if you want the exact same baby name ideas every time you run it; leave it blank for fresh random picks.
  5. 5Run the tool — each name shows its rank and real U.S. birth count, so you can judge how popular baby names really are before you shortlist.

Good to know

  • Data is U.S. Social Security records for births in 2024 only — it is not global, and 2025 data is not included.
  • Names with fewer than 5 U.S. births in 2024 are absent from the SSA data, so this tool cannot suggest truly rare names.
  • The "popularity" band selects the source range (top 100 or top 1000), not a forecast of future popularity.
  • Unseeded runs are random; the same inputs can return different names unless you set a seed.

How it works

Every name comes from the U.S. Social Security Administration's national baby-name data for births in 2024 (public domain — a work of the U.S. federal government). The tool embeds the top 1,000 girl names and top 1,000 boy names with their real birth counts; SSA ranks each gender's list by count descending (alphabetical on ties, minimum 5 occurrences). The generator filters this real data by your gender, letter, and band choices, then draws a random sample without replacement — no names are invented. Randomness uses a seeded PRNG when you give a seed, otherwise Math.random, so unseeded runs vary.

Examples

Ten girl names from the top 100

Summary: 10 random girl names from the SSA top-100 for 2024 — each entry shows its rank and birth count, e.g. "Olivia — #1 girl name, 14,718 U.S. births in 2024".

Boy names starting with M, wider band

Summary: 5 random boy names starting with "M" from the SSA top-1000 for 2024.

Repeatable picks with a seed

Summary: 8 random boy and girl names starting with "E" from the SSA top-1000 for 2024 — the seed makes the picks identical on every run.
